I'm knitting socks as a goodbye gift for my roommate! I did a bunch at Christmas to give to my friends and had leftover yarn.
TIPS & TRICKS: Keeping Track with DPNs
As much as I love using circle needles, sometimes, double pointed needles just fit the need more. They're much better for smaller pieces, like this one. But this makes it harder to keep track of the number of rows, or more importantly, in my case, where the row started. Especially since the beginning isn't in the middle of the work, and all DPNs have the same amount of stitches.
I always carry a hairband with me, out of habit, so it was really just using what was there. I took it and attached it to the needle where the row began. I never lost track, even if I had to do the annoying action of removing it once I got to it to the next needle that marked where the row began.
If someone has a better method for me, let me know! I would love to find out!
(Note: usually, I just look at where the tail is situated, but in this case, I was starting by the bottom of a sphere, so the tail just hung in the middle of my work. So it was important, especially for the first few rows, to figure out where the beginning was. Eventually though, I was able to figure it out from the structure of my piece.)
So much work these days, and I've only had time to knit in class (especially during presentations). I've been learning how to continental knit (because I do English style), which is strange and a little foreign, but very rapid.
These socks are knit from the toe, which was also interesting (but not difficult to figure out).
A pair of @musedotmuofficial socks I knit for a friend for Christmas. I had to construct my own pattern. It was so fun to knit! I have a few other socks planned, the pattern depending on the friend.
Another one of my socks. It's a bit of an inside joke with a friend. The heel I'd supposed to be green (you can't tell much from the photo though).
Knitting in class…
I knit in class, at university. It helps me concentrate, especially during a lecture. It also is somewhat my "thing", in that people have told me they see someone knitting and think "wait… it's got to be…"
I haven't gotten any bad responses from a teacher yet, but I did get a strong one yesterday during class. I was sort of tucked in a corner, so she didn't notice until halfway through class. She just interrupted her lecture abruptly, looked at me, and said, "What are you knitting?"
"A square as part of a larger quilt."
"Let's see?"
I turned my piece around.
"Fantastic!"
Another student piped, "She's really good at it too!"
"That's so great to help focus," my professor added.
"Yeah, it really helps me," I explained.
She then goes off on a tangent about knitting, crocheting, and felting for a few minutes, before resuming class.
I don't know what it is with knitting, maybe the nostalgia of it all, but it often gets me these strong reactions.
I've been trying out some different type of larger knitting. This is done with my fingers, some halfway between arm knitting and knitting with regular needles.
So much was closing in about the women who sat knitting, knitting, that they their very selves were closing in around a structure yet unbuilt, where they were to sit knitting, knitting, counting dropping heads.

I guess sitting in the front row, right in the center in a small class, therefore just in front of the professor is standing, and knitting can be distracting. Not for me, of course.
Right in the middle of giving a lecture, my professor stops. (This happens to me too much).
Professor: It's quite incredible that you're knitting in class!
Me: Is it distracting? Because I can stop.
Professor: No, no, it's fine. It's just amazing.
Me: It helps me concentrate.
Professor: It looks very therapeutic for you. Look! *She holds up one of my socks" This is what she's making! Isn't it incredible?
Other student: Yeah, I just watch her, and she will be so concentrated in class, and just stop knitting to take down notes, and then just resumes.
Professor: Well, finally it seems it was a little distracting. But that's fine.
I could tell she was continuously glancing at what I was knitting.
But Jo had her own eyes to take care of, and feeling that they could not be trusted, she prudently kept them on the little sock she was knitting, like a model maiden aunt.
